Fondo de Ahorro de Panama Reaffirms Its Commitment to Panama Amidst the National Emergency
Panama | October 11, 2026
Following the declaration of a national state of emergency following the earthquake on October 9, the Panama Savings Fund (FAP) expresses its solidarity with the affected families and communities and remains attentive to the evolving situation, in communication with the competent authorities.
As part of the institutional response, the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) has assessed the financial needs identified to date and reported that the country has the resources to address the damage and most urgent needs, without the need to resort to the FAP or initiate the procedures established for its use. This is because, according to current estimates, the cost of the emergency does not reach the statutory threshold for utilizing the Fund, which is equivalent to 0.5% of GDP (approximately US$450 million).
The FAP serves as a long-term savings and state financial stabilization mechanism, designed to contribute to the country's capacity to respond to extraordinary circumstances. The use of its resources is based on an assessment of financial needs and compliance with conditions established by law, as part of the mechanisms available to the State to address emergency situations.
The Fund maintains a solid financial position and reiterates its commitment to Panama and its readiness to continue working in coordination with the MEF and competent authorities, remaining attentive to the evolution of the situation and prepared to fulfill its purpose when circumstances so require, in accordance with the law.
